The Motto Of Mendocino Grove: ‘Camping Made Comfy’
Teresa Raffo and her husband Chris Hougie are known for their acclaimed project: Cornerstone Gardens, a series of peerless public gardens located near the city of Sonoma. In 2015, their love of nature and passion for creative enterprise led the couple to Mendocino County, where they are creating Mendocino Grove, a camping experience even non-campers will remember for years to come.
“We weren’t looking for a campground,” Teresa smiles. Happy accidents led the couple to purchase and renovate a once-neglected Mendocino campground that today embodies “glamping.”
“This is my kind of camping—an effortless experience of being outdoors,” Teresa smiles. The 35-acre property is located minutes from Mendocino Village. Large canvas tents are pitched on sturdy wood platforms in a stately, tree-studded meadow. The tents are outfitted simply and luxuriously, with premium beds, heated mattress pads, electric lighting and snuggly down comforters. The tents accommodate individuals and families of six. Campers may cook their own meals on communal grills or enjoy Mendocino’s stellar eateries just a short drive away.
“We love creating community. Nature helps us do that. This is a place for people to release the stressful aspects of life,” Teresa continues. “People are starved for authenticity. We’re responding to the history of this campground and the deeper history of our community.”
The day begins with a hot beverage bar, and community fires are lit morning and evening. Spotless restrooms and hot showers are stocked with fine linens and sustainable bath products. Guests avail themselves of Yoga classes, hiking trails and access to canoeing at the nearby Stanford Inn. Children, dogs, and groups are welcome. Mendocino Grove’s season runs from May 3rd to October 31. In November, the season winds down with weekends-only reservations.
