How far would you travel to give birth? If you’re a female gray whale the answer is up to 12,000 miles. Beginning in the fall they leave the rapidly cooling waters of Alaska on a migratory trail traveling south along the western United States coastline to the warmer and saltier waters of Mexico, where the pregnant females finally give birth. Oh! And then starting in February, with their newborn calves, they turn right around and swim all the way back to Alaska.
