The Motto Of Mendocino Grove: ‘Camping Made Comfy’
Teresa Raffo and her husband Chris Hougie are known for their acclaimed project: Cornerstone Gardens, a series of peerless public gardens located near the city of Sonoma. In 2015, their love of nature and passion for creative enterprise led the couple to Mendocino County, where they are creating Mendocino Grove, a camping experience even non-campers will remember for years to come.
“We weren’t looking for a campground,” Teresa smiles. Happy accidents led the couple to purchase and renovate a once-neglected Mendocino campground that today embodies “glamping.”
“This is my kind of camping—an effortless experience of being outdoors,” Teresa smiles. The 35-acre property is located minutes from Mendocino Village. Large canvas tents are pitched on sturdy wood platforms in a stately, tree-studded meadow. The tents are outfitted simply and luxuriously, with premium beds, heated mattress pads, electric lighting and snuggly down comforters. The tents accommodate individuals and families of six. Campers may cook their own meals on communal grills or enjoy Mendocino’s stellar eateries just a short drive away.
“We love creating community. Nature helps us do that. This is a place for people to release the stressful aspects of life,” Teresa continues. “People are starved for authenticity. We’re responding to the history of this campground and the deeper history of our community.”
The day begins with a hot beverage bar, and community fires are lit morning and evening. Spotless restrooms and hot showers are stocked with fine linens and sustainable bath products. Guests avail themselves of Yoga classes, hiking trails and access to canoeing at the nearby Stanford Inn. Children, dogs, and groups are welcome. Mendocino Grove’s season runs May 3rd to October 31. In November, the season winds down with weekends-only reservations.

‘You Rent It. We Park It.’
Love for each other and the outdoors was a prime motivator for Peter Robblee and Wendy Daniels, owners of Coast Vacation Trailers. In 2005, when Peter and Wendy married, they combined their skills and purchased their first of 19 trailers, which are rented to vacationers wishing to combine the enjoyment of camping with the convenience of a kitchen and comfortable bed.
“Peter does the maintenance, and I’m the queen of scheduling,” smiles Wendy. Beautifully outfitted trailers are delivered by Peter and set up at your campsite or your coastal wedding or vacation venue—ready to go. “All you need to bring are clothes and groceries,” Wendy notes. Campers often meet Peter at the campsite to pick up the keys. Within minutes, your vacation has begun.
A number of trailer models are available, offering visitors exactly what they need, a cozy trailer for two or deluxe models that can easily sleep six. Each trailer is equipped with a complete set of kitchen and dining ware, towels and linens. Upon request, Peter can deliver extra propane, a barbecue or even firewood. Detailed instruction manuals are provided with each trailer, and Wendy has excellent relationships with local campgrounds. “We love helping people locate the right campground and the right campsite for their needs.”
The trailers are also used for reunions and weddings. Trailers may be installed roughly between Westport and Anchor Bay, and dogs are welcome for an additional fee. The season opens in March and closes in mid-November. Reservations are essential.

‘Don’t Forget The Magic’
Need a beautiful, secluded property for your wedding, reunion or campout? Mendocino Magic is a unique
Camping includes: communal kitchen, gas grill with refrigerators, charcoal grills, fire pit at Lanai, 2500 square foot sound stage, over 3 miles of hiking trails,
Since 2015 Mendocino Magic has pledged to get more people outside and with the help of Hipcamp.com, hundreds of campers who have experienced the site. Working with the local Inland Mendocino County Land Trust, their long term goals for minimizing development on site while the community grows are ecologically balanced and verified by a third party.
They host campers year round, which means four seasons of environmental education opportunities for guests on site as well as four seasons of simply encouraging guests to find themselves outside. The hope is that over time this notion of consciousness can guide the next generation of environmental stewards.
